Finally! A book I can relate too!! Ha Ha!
By SteelPhil
When this book showed up I couldn't put it down until I had read everything relating to the half dozen Gibson amps I already own. It was very easy to pinpoint the models and years of manufacture. I popped in the CD and immediately printed out the operators manuals for all the amps I own, as well as the tube charts for each. A copy of this info will always be with each amp.
Reading through the amp descriptions, I've settled upon a couple of amps I'm now dying to own, and will be searching out.
Layout of the book is pretty straight forward, the pictures are all clear, and the year-to-year production totals is nice to know. I would have liked to see the inards of a few more of the models, and some servicing recommendations. I know that there are other books about tube amp repair, but a small section could have easily been included.
There is really no mention in the book as to which of the models are collectable or desireable. You'll have to come to your own conclusions as to that subject.
I'm am really gratefull to the author for compiling this information and finally having a book dedicated to just Gibson amps. Yahoo!!!

If you're the slightest bit curious about Gibson amps, you need this.

Gibson has been well known for a century for their guitars, mandolins and banjos. Some of their other product lines like basses and amps have done so-so but not even a blip on the radar compared to their main competitor, Fender. Over the years they've made organs (well, MADE for Gibson), lapsteels, ukeleles, ect... that had their day but are gone.
I've always had a soft spot for Gibson amps and not so many years ago used to be dirt cheap, not so much anymore. I've used a Gold Chorus for years and have had several different ones (one of my old ones is shown in the book) as well as the 1-12 version without chorus, the Gold Classic.
This book pretty much has every Gibson amp ever made until the time it was published although most of the time was spent with the earlier tube amps they go into some detail on the later solid state amps but they have a few details wrong here and there. The Gold Chorus for instance NEVER had a tube preamp in it like the book states, however, the 1-12 Classic Gold combo did, even if it was only used when the boost was on. With both amps side by side, you don't really notice a difference anyway.
Overall if you're into Gibson, this is required reading, and you'll learn what amps were more or less clones of other famous amps at the time and which were unique.

Useful, yes, but at least one shortcoming
By Experienced Listener
The author has at least one amplifier wrong, which makes me suspect about the general usefulness of the book. I have a Gibson GA8-T, and it has a 10 inch speaker, not a 12 inch speaker as Mr Marx writes in the book. It also tests out at about 9 watts (or so), not the 15 as he writes. The schematics are, however, very detailed and useful. I gave the CD to the amp tech who does a LOT of work around greater Detroit, and he was very happy. In short, read and verify before making any moves (like buying a replacement speaker).
