This the best book for graduate and undergraduate student ever !
By husam
As a PhD candidate in the area of Electrical and Computer Engineering I usually learn things by doing that things. This book helped me to understand many theoretical theory which I was struggling to understand it exactly as stated in the theory. Getting things done using a Matlab is an essential part for students and for researcher as well. It is very useful and helpful to learn some specific theoretical topics and convert them down to Matlab code. Also, the book goes surprisingly deep into the maths, so, again, as an engineer, reading a Matlab script make it easier for me to understand the formulas. Actually this books works the same if some one doing problems solving which is the real challenge for all students to demonstrate their understanding the material the need to be examined for. This the best book for graduate and undergraduate student ever !

lots of MATLAB codes -- especially good for beginning research students
By ABC
I myself prefer Yang's "MATLAB/Simulink for Digital Communication" over Proakis' aforementioned "Contemporary Communication Systems using MATLAB".
(1) Despite the title of Proakis' text, it is not "contemporary" due to its omission of OFDM or anything multi-carrier, as far as I can tell. In contrast, Yang's text has 50 pages on OFDM.
(2) Proakis' exposition aims to teach and to explain the theory, with the MATLAB codes included like an after-thought. However, Proakis' exposition could be somewhat terse for a reader to learn the theory for the first time. On the other hand, Proakis' exposition could be too lengthy for someone who already knows the theory but want to learn MATLAB realization of a communication system. I would use one of Proakis' o-t-h-e-r texts or one of Haykin's text to learn the theory, but I would use Yang's text for a student seriously interested to learn MATLAB realization of a communication system. Yang's text cannot replace (and apparently does not intend to replace) a textbook on the basic theories nor the MATLAB manual.
(3) Yang's book has many more MATLAB codes and subroutines than Proakis' book. I would guess maybe double as much, or more. Proakis' *.m codes are a bit simplistic and a bit few for a beginning research student. Yang's exposition is terse on theory, not so much to explain or to teach the theory, but simply to state the theory in sufficient PRACTICAL details, so that the reader can understand his MATLAB codes. Yang's codes are very detailed. Yang's text has 50 pages on OFDM. Indeed, I am buying Yang's text, so that some masters students could use it for their masters project.
Yang's text has one shortcoming: While its English is totally intelligible to me, it can be awkward. E.g., "Instead, this book is designed to play a role of bridge between MATLAB software and the theory, ..." How about "This book aims instead to bridge theory and MATLAB." This reduces 17 words to 9 words, a 47% reduction and a easier read. But then, I bought this book not for its exposition, which is good in technical details, if not always idiomatically expressed. I bought it for its MATLAB features.

Very useful book for practitioners
By Julius Kusuma
I received this book very promptly even though it was shipped from Korea to the US.
This book fills in a very important niche: it goes through basic derivation of algorithms and techniques for communication systems, and gives actual implementation examples in MATLAB and Simulink.
Most other books either do one or the other, but I have not found one that does both in a way that was useful. To contrast, Prokis' textbook on Digital Communications is very good for explaining the analytical aspects, but gives no hands-on examples that can be done on a computer. And his small book on "Contemporary Comm Systems using MATLAB" is too small to be useful for anybody other than undergraduate students who want to do only the simplest systems.
While the book of this review does not cover the analytical side in as much detail as many other books, I think that the hands-on examples and exercises are very valuable. It is too bad that software companies such as The MathWorks itself doesn't recognize that this is a niche that they need to fill, especially given the popularity of MATLAB.
The only complain that I have is that in some cases, the derivation is given only for real-valued signals/systems. It will be nice to give all derivations for complex-valued signals/systems.
Overall, I highly recommend this book for practitioners who already have a good background in communications.
