Leviathan, by James Byron Huggins

In a subterranean cavern on a deserted Icelandic island ends in terror for the imprisoned scientific team that creates a fantastic beast from the biblical book of Job: “And behold, Leviathan, on Earth it has no equal …”

Using a komodo dragon, scientists use an electromagnetic field to unleash its ancient DNA and create Leviathan – an armored dragon that can withstand the heavy weapons fire of tanks and missiles – a beast that can shred a steel vault like paper – a creature that can breathe fire that burns like napalm.

And although Dr. Frank, its creator, had initially designed a super-strong containment center knowing full well that Leviathan’s immeasurable physical strength and titanic rage would be their instant doom if it escaped, Frank did not calculate on what destruction Leviathan could wreak with the combined might of its nova-like fire and strength combined.Leviathan soon escapes.

The entire facility shuts down to prevent Leviathan from also escaping into the world, so now the beast cannot flee the installation. But neither can anyone else flee from the vast, underground labyrinth. And that includes Jackson Connor, a resourceful electrician who must somehow find a way to destroy Leviathan in order to save his wife and son.

Also upon the island is a mystical, modernage Viking who is himself of titanic size and titanic strength, and Thor senses what might have been unleashed in the cavern far below. So, sadly, and knowing that this might well be both his destiny and his doom, Thor lifts a gigantic battle ax from the wall of his lighthouse and descends into the cavern to fight with them … or die with them.In 24 hours a nuclear holocaust – a final failsafe – will detonate to destroy Leviathan, the island, and everyone inside the facility. So the wounded and desperate survivors have no choice but to kill Leviathan or perish.Three thousand years ago Job wrote in the bible that no force on Earth possessed the strength to destroy Leviathan.

But now Leviathan has come …

And they must find a way to destroy it.

From Publishers Weekly
Cast from the mold of Michael Crichton's cautionary tales about scientific excess but given a Christian glaze, this novel pits one Jackson Connor?whose initials aren't incidental?against a monster created through genetic manipulation. "Electromagnetic chromosomal" means have allowed Dr. Peter Frank to turn a Komodo dragon's DNA into that of a "Leviathan," grown by Stygian Enterprises to sell to the U.S. government as a weapon of war. Things get out of control, allowing Huggins (The Reckoning) to express a virulent disdain for the feds and an only slightly more tempered lack of regard for scientific research. Salvation comes at the hands of Connor, an electrician employed by Stygian on the arctic island where Leviathan is based; he is aided in the good fight by Thor Magnusson, a scholarly giant of a priest hiding from the forces of evil. Huggins is a far from subtle writer, given to preaching and melodrama ("what we have accomplished in this cavern may very well have altered the nature of life as we know it," intones one character), but once the action gets up to steam, he takes readers on a merry, entertaining ride. Whether the book, drenched in apocalyptic Christian theology, will cross over to a secular readership remains to be seen, however.

More mayhem and monsters from Huggins
By Michael C. Hedrick
After having read "Cain" and "Hunter", I was on familiar ground with my third Huggins book. As with the others, it is a story of good superhero vs. evil monster. As with the others, however, it has most of the same flaws. This time there are two heroes instead of one, in the form of a viking Catholic priest named Thor and a grim handyman named Jackson Connor. Thor is literally a giant with an axe to grind and the mind of a literature scholar. Still, how can a man be both eight feet tall and built like Hercules? Even the tallest NBA stars aren't eight feet, and they look like beanpoles. Jackson Connor, however, is much closer to a normal person than any of Huggins' other heroes. He's simply a smart, tough guy with a background in fixing everything, and he generally outthinks the monster instead of outfighting him, unlike the others. This makes Jackson the most plausible and empathic of the main characters in the three books, but there are some flaws. 1) The relationship with his young son is pure sap. 2) Everyone calls him by his last name, even his wife. 3) Why is Jackson working as a foreman at a research site, even for extra pay, when his wife is obviously a computer genius? On to the monster. This time it's an honest-to-goodness dragon, making it the most invincible, and coolest, of Huggins' other monsters. The science behind the artificially created beast is believable enough for this genre, and the idea of a fire-breathing lizard running around making charbroil out of a bunch of idiots is very appealing. In one of the better parts of the book, Huggins even has Thor recount (apparently) genuine historical writings on actual dragon encounters in recorded history. HOWEVER, there are more than a few mistakes. Thor actually fights the dragon hand to hand in one unconvincing, if epic, battle, and the result is completely implausible. The dragon actually sees the shadow of the Devil, directing the beast to kill the boy. Finally, the wringer Jackson puts it through at the end is unbelievable. Not even the wounded Leviathan could withstand the whole series of traps he lays at the end. Finally, the evil-bad-guy-project-director is the same stereotype found in the other books. Then there are the usual literary mistakes. Huggins uses the same adjectives over and over again. The introduction of the dragon's statistics is a ham-handed presentation. There's a totally unnecessary side trip into virtual reality. And when Jackson finally kills the thing at the end using a particular tool, the method he employs should have killed him too if you pay attention to the details of its use. Yet all of this isn't to say I didn't enjoy it anyway. It's just disappointing to see the same stuff over and over again, even though that's what action books/movies usually boil down to. After the first third of the book it becomes a constant pulse-pounding action sequence as the good guys lay traps and fight the beast with a constant barrage from grenade launchers. Huggins introduces some interesting history and mythology without laying on the Christianity too thick. The science is pretty cool, and Thor is interesting, if implausible. In the end, this book is a lot like a good action movie: turn your brain off, bring plenty of popcorn, and have a good time.

A Christian Jurassic Park?
By Godly Gadfly
Leviathan is one of Huggins' earliest novels, and precedes "Cain", a book which established him in mainstream fiction and was also developed into a movie. "Leviathan" is the name of a powerful beast that is the product of a secret science project in an underground facility deep in the Arctic Circle. But Leviathan proves to be stronger and smarter than its creators, and when it escapes its containment chamber, it threatens to kill everyone in reach. But that isn't the only problem - Leviathan's escape sets off a fail-safe sequence that will detonate a nuclear device within 24 hours. There is only one way to escape the nuclear holocaust: by killing Leviathan within 24 hours. This book features heart-stopping suspense as the only ones who can stop Leviathan are the giant Norwegian Thor, and the unassuming electrical wizard Connor. Can they stop Leviathan? Can they do it within 24 hours? Two words sum up the plot that unravels:
1. Action thriller. The novel starts with a bang, and rarely slows down. Huggins has a style that will leave your heart pounding, and you'll find yourself racing over the words and through the pages. The action never lets up, so prepare yourself for a roller-coaster ride of action. Only one problem: expect to see the same scenery. The "terrible roar" of Leviathan and the "hate-filled rage" of its hunters rapidly wears thin after the umpteenth time. Certainly the action is fast and furious, but the dragon's repeated roar and the repeated shouts and shooting of his hunters gets tiresome after a while. Also be warned that the extent of blood and gore is not suitable for children.
2. Apocalyptic themes. Unlike most thrillers, Huggins is clearly working with deeper themes. There is a clear and cosmic conflict between good and evil, and Huggins makes several Biblical references to ensure that we understand this is a picture of the conflict between God and Satan. The name "Leviathan" is drawn straight from the Bible (p.44), and is an ancient name for "dragon" (p.68). Although Huggins' exegesis and historical description of Leviathan is questionable (p.73ff), the apocalyptic imagery is unmistakable, as we get glimpses of the beast rising from the sea described in Revelation. Huggins' story does not completely fit with Revelation, which describes both a dragon and several beasts. Revelation's imagery is symbolic - whereas Huggins tries to present this as a real conflict with a real dragon. But probably it would be unfair to criticize him too severely for this: he intends the conflict against Leviathan to be a spiritual picture of the great struggle against evil and its master, Satan. He takes great pains to describe the background of this conflict as the fall into sin, and presents the battle against Leviathan as a microcosm of the great and last battle, the Armageddon (p.63-4). In Huggins' view, all of life is spiritual, and is part of the great struggle of good and evil (p.231). Thor is the Messiah figure who features prominently in the great battle against evil, and like Christ is even pierced in his side (p.326), as he struggles valiantly against the dragon, even willing to give his own life for those he loves.
But ultimately the philosophy and deeper religious significance is washed away by a superficial stream of repetitive story-line. Although gripping and suspenseful, the plot is not always completely convincing, its characters not completely credible. Any serious message that this book has to offer is hampered by a plot that seems to have the same fighting, rage and fire over and over again. The great deal of technical jargon about computers and science does lend the novel some authenticity, but also weighs it down unnecessarily. Whatever religious meaning the novel does have to offer is further undermined by the stream of hate and curses unleashed by its hero Thor, and the surprisingly frequent instances of blasphemy (p.137,148,205,313) and unnecessary oaths (p.239,260).
In the end, I felt that I was reading a script for a revised movie of Jurassic Park, rather than a Christian thriller novel. If you like reading about men being crunched in the jaws of a giant predator and fighting back with all kinds of weapons, you'll love this novel. It's Jurassic Park all over again, with a Christian slant, but not quite with an equally successful execution. Don't expect a whole lot more than that.

Good Story -- not overwhelming theology
By D. Thompson
I was surprised at people who said this book was too preachy. I actually questioned a few times whether I was reading a Christian book. Not that there was objectionable material, but the theology is limited to a very very cursory look at basic theism. It's not that God is downplayed -- he is actually revered, but there's very little (if any) of the "Gospel Message" given, the theology can be summed up -- God exists, He is good. That doesn't explain the amount of cursing (the words aren't shown) that comes from the mouth of the upstanding, faith-filled hero. Read the book, and see how many times a "savage curse" erupts from Thor's lips. That kind of mars whatever theology is in there.

That's not to downplay anything about the story. It's very gripping, and there's no break in the action. Even the technological jargon is explained well enough so as not to draw the reader out of the story.

Author's tendencies in wording that bug me (I'm a journalism major, and an extreme proofreader) are "savage curse," used almomst every time Thor reaches extreme physical exertion, and "distended" used every time the monster's jaws or fangs are referenced.

Well written period spy adventure
By dedlund
I selected this novel because it won the 2015 Adventure Writer's Competition. The plot is more WWII spy adventure than it is action or thriller, not my normal cup of tea. However, if that is your thing, then you'll want to read Mr. Wells' book. It is very well written with strong and well developed characters. There are some surprising twists to the plot as well, enough to keep the reader guessing.

A gripping, fast paced read
By Kelly
Josef Schafer is a Luftwaffe pilot, but when his plane goes down over English territory, he is forced to strike a deal that puts everything he knows, including his very life in danger. He is a man torn between warring loyalties – to his sister, who he left behind in South Africa years ago, to his brothers in the Reich, and to a French freedom fighter who makes him question what he believes.

Sounds like the makings of a dramatic book, right? And it is.

The Kingdom of the Air delivers on the action front – it’s a fast paced read that I knocked out in about a week. The flying scenes are great – enough technical knowledge has gone into them to be realistic, but Wells pulls back before it starts to sound academic.

But where I really thought this story shone was in the way it dealt with the morality of war and how in times of conflict, nothing is black and white.

When your main character is a Nazi, morality becomes a theme to be handled very, very carefully. Wells handles it with aplomb – you empathise with Josef’s struggle without feeling that you’re suddenly cheering for the wrong team, and the characters on both sides of the line have to struggle with shifting world views.

Is Kingdom of the Air the only and best WW2 story you’ll ever read? Maybe not. But it’s an engaging, thought provoking story, and on top of that, the writing itself is competent and subtle.

If there is a sequel (which it seems that there just may be) I will certainly be keeping an eye out for it.

Action adventure
By ZMW
As soon as The Battle of Britain is mentioned, I’m hooked. And this book is set in 1940 at that time in English history.

So what is there to like about C.T. Wells’ first novel The Kingdom of the Air? The short answer is, “a lot”. For lovers of thrillers, historical novels, and a spice of romance this book is a “must”. There is action, tension, danger and excitement aplenty.

The story is unusual in that the hero, Josef Shafer, is a complex character of South African and German descent. He becomes an ace Luftwaffe pilot, having sworn allegiance to Adolf Hitler. How he juggles this allegiance with increasingly competing demands on his loyalty forms the backbone of the story.

The author’s writing style is pleasing. He brings the reader right into the scene—for example, the description of the motorbike rider’s jacket billowing in the wind. So simple, but effective.

Dialogue flows smoothly and fits the characters.

I wasn’t sure I was going to enjoy this book when I first began reading. I was put off by a glitch in formatting and there were one or two typos, but before long I couldn’t wait to find out what was going to happen next.

Any film makers out there? This book is a good candidate for an action movie. Highly recommended.

Wonderful book. Have been out of coding since 1998
By Janis Jackson
Wonderful book. Have been out of coding since 1998,and am doing a refresher for ICD-9 CM. Medical Record Technology school--altho. the best--did NOT teach us coding! Clinical practice experiences were less than helpful! We learned on the job in the1980s and 90s with those killer DRGs, and it was sink or swim! Wish I'd had such resources then! I'd never even heard of CPT before my 3rd and 4th jobs (in hospitals). I am also learning ICD-10, but will need more than this book! Thanks a million, tho. Seller! And authors! You are all terrific! Amazon.com is amazing!

Medical Coding Fundamentals by Susan Goldsmith and Marc Leib
By Marty
This book does not contain answers to any of the in-text exercises nor to any of the end-of-chapter exercises. If your goal is to study medical coding in a self-reliant manner, forget about this text. Simply stated: this is NOT a student-friendly text by any means. Unless you are formally enrolled in a course in which this is a required text, I would NOT recommend this book. You would have to depend on the teacher for more than just solutions to the exercises in this book.

No answer key for textbook and workbook
By Sherrie
Very informative and well written. Each chapter ends with excellent practice questions. However, the lack of an answer sheet makes it difficult to know if your understanding of the material is correct. There should be an answer sheet, this would be most helpful for study purposes. If this oversight was rectified, the book would be 5 stars easily. As the book stands now, it is not worth buying. I am returning both the textbook and workbook.

Time's Eye (Time Odyssey), by Arthur C. Clarke, Stephen Baxter

Sir Arthur C. Clarke is a living legend, a writer whose name has been synonymous with science fiction for more than fifty years. An indomitable believer in human and scientific potential, Clarke is a genuine visionary. If Clarke has an heir among today’s science fiction writers, it is award-winning author Stephen Baxter. In each of his acclaimed novels, Baxter has demonstrated dazzling gifts of imagination and intellect, along with a rare ability to bring the most cerebral science dramatically to life. Now these two champions of humanism and scientific speculation have combined their talents in a novel sure to be one of the most talked-about of the year, a 2001 for the new millennium.

TIME’S EYE

For eons, Earth has been under observation by the Firstborn, beings almost as old as the universe itself. The Firstborn are unknown to humankind— until they act. In an instant, Earth is carved up and reassembled like a huge jigsaw puzzle. Suddenly the planet and every living thing on it no longer exist in a single timeline. Instead, the world becomes a patchwork of eras, from prehistory to 2037, each with its own indigenous inhabitants.

Scattered across the planet are floating silver orbs impervious to all weapons and impossible to communicate with. Are these technologically advanced devices responsible for creating and sustaining the rifts in time? Are they cameras through which inscrutable alien eyes are watching? Or are they something stranger and more terrifying still?

The answer may lie in the ancient city of Babylon, where two groups of refugees from 2037—three cosmonauts returning to Earth from the International Space Station, and three United Nations peacekeepers on a mission in Afghanistan—have detected radio signals: the only such signals on the planet, apart from their own. The peacekeepers find allies in nineteenth-century British troops and in the armies of Alexander the Great. The astronauts, crash-landed in the steppes of Asia, join forces with the Mongol horde led by Genghis Khan. The two sides set out for Babylon, each determined to win the race for knowledge . . . and the power that lies within.

Yet the real power is beyond human control, perhaps even human understanding. As two great armies face off before the gates of Babylon, it watches, waiting. . . .

Amazon.com Review
Sir Arthur C. Clarke may be the greatest science fiction writer in the world; certainly, he's the best-known, not least because he wrote the novel and coauthored the screenplay of 2001: A Space Odyssey. He's also the only SF writer to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize or to be knighted by Her Majesty Elizabeth II. This god of SF has twice collaborated with one of the best SF writers to emerge in the 1990s, Stephen Baxter, winner of the British SF Award, the Locus Award, and the Philip K. Dick Award. Their first collaboration is the novel The Light of Other Days. Their second is the novel Time's Eye: Book One of a Time Odyssey.

As the subtitle indicates, Time's Eye is the first book of a series intended to do for time what 2001 did for space. Does Time's Eye succeed in this goal? No. In 2001, humanity discovers a mysterious monolith on the moon, triggering a signal that astronauts pursue to one of the moons of Jupiter. In Time's Eye, mysterious satellites appear all around the Earth and scramble time, bringing together an ape-woman; twenty- first-century soldiers and astronauts; nineteenth-century British and Indian soldiers; and the armies of Genghis Khan and Alexander the Great. The characters march around in search of other survivors, then clash in epic battle. It's not until the end that the novel returns to the mystery of the tiny, eye-like satellites (and doesn't solve it). In other words, the plot of Time's Eye is a nearly 300-page digression, and 2001 fans expecting exploration of the scientific enigma and examination of the meaning of existence will be disappointed. However, fans of rousing and well-written transtemporal adventure in the tradition of S.M. Stirling's novel Island in the Sea of Time will enjoy Time's Eye. --Cynthia Ward

From Publishers Weekly
Clarke, with Baxter (Coalescent), probably the most talented of the former's several collaborators, have cooked up an exciting tale full of high-tech physics, military tactics and larger-than-life characters in the first of two novels related to the bestselling senior author's Space Odyssey series. In an awesome and unexplained catastrophe, the earth has been literally diced and put back together again. Each of the segments of terrain (and you can actually see the dividing lines between them) comes from a different era, some of them millions of years apart. As the novel opens, a 19th-century British army company, stationed on the Afghan-Pakistani border, captures an Australopithecine mother and child, just as a team of 21st-century U.N. peacekeepers crash their helicopter nearby. Later they join forces with Alexander the Great. Simultaneously, a Soyuz descent vehicle, having just left the International Space Station, crash-lands in the middle of Genghis Khan's army. Eventually, the armies of Alexander and the Khan converge on Babylon, the last remaining large city in Eurasia and a titanic battle seems imminent. Fans of 2001: A Space Odyssey will have fun with the many references to that earlier novel. Although not flawless, this is probably the best book to appear with Clarke's name on it in a decade.

From Booklist
Mysterious, incredibly superior alien beings assemble a new Earth out of bits and pieces of the old one, which they snatch from various eras. So a UN helicopter crew from 2037, a crew of astronauts from the same era, Genghis Khan and his Horde, Alexander the Great and his army, a British Indian outpost where Rudyard Kipling (rendered here in all his youthful complexity) is visiting, and a remnant of Babylon end up coexisting. Not at all peacefully, either, especially when one astronaut, a ruthless and foul-mouthed American woman, decides to aid and abet the Mongols in their career of world conquest, which can be halted only by the other civilized time travelers joining forces with a very well portrayed Alexander. In the end, civilization's prospects have been propped up, and one of the UN crew is off to find the aliens (her search will be, one presumes, the subject of another book). With Clarke and Baxter collaborating smoothly, this is a fine exploration of themes that Clarke has explored regularly since Childhood's End (1953), at least, and good news for those who enjoy both men's work. Oh, yes, this book begins a new saga, entitled A Time Odyssey--does that ring a bell? Roland Green

What If?
By Donald Mitchell
Because of the many similarities of the premise of this book to 2001, many readers will pick the book up expecting something quite similar and stimulating in the same ways. That expectation would be wrong. Although on the surface the books have similar elements, Time's Eye uses a story-telling technique that focuses much more on bringing incongruities from different periods of history together to imaginatively describe "what if?" You have famous authors (Rudyard Kipling), famous conquerors (Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan), and famous places (Babylon in its prime) brought together in unexpected collisions. It's like running a particle accelerator to collide with something to see what might happen.
The book lives or dies by how compelling you find the historical juxtapositions. I personally found them to be mildly interesting . . . but not compelling. The story itself was a little clunky in its plot elements, and I found myself disbelieving the ending.
The 2001-like element in the book mostly recedes into the background. Had it been more in the foreground, the book could have been a four-star effort.
I loved the idea of including the CD with bonus book and other material. Nice!
Perhaps the series will improve in the rest of the book . . . I hope so. The potential for a good story is certainly there.

This was anything but sci-fi
By Contrarian View
The only reason this book got more than 1 star was that I loved the premise. A race powerful beyond the comprehension of homo sapiens manipulates time and space to salvage (or loot depending on one's beliefs) the laboratory its inhabitants call Earth. Unfortunately, the development of the First Ones, as they are called, is non-existent. Just too much of the book is devoted to historical characters. If I wanted to learn more about Genghis Khan and the Mongol culture or how Alexander the Great moved his army from place to place, I would pick up the appropriate historical book. It was almost as though the authors did not want to address the sci-fi premise in this the first book of a series.

In fact, with the exception of a few scattered paragraphs devoted to the speculations of the "moderns" about the super race that transformed Earth into Mir, the entire sci-fi element of the book is left to the reader's imagination - or should it be the reader's supernatural beliefs?

Unlike the other reviewers, I couldn't help but focus on the religious overtones in the book. If I were conspiracy-minded I might wonder if this was Clarke and Baxter's way of questioning Darwinian Evolution. For starters, there is the end of the world as seen through the eyes of three travelers shortly after 2000 AD, the belief of the main characters that the temporal changes were wrought by an intelligence beyond their comprehension, and Bisesa Dutt's six month-plus vigil to The Eye in the Temple of Marduk.

The vigil leads to her belief that the First Ones were communicating with her; her sojourn, imagined or otherwise, to a place that one might easily call Helll; and the First Ones response to both her desperate prayer for her lover's life and her ardent desire to be reunited with her daughter.

As the editorial reviewer of amazon.com wrote this was a three hundred page digression. If the goal was to convince me, the reader, to buy the sequel it failed -- spectacularly.

Great idea, so-so execution
By Alex Tolley
This novel mixes themes from both Clarke's and Baxter's prior work - ancient intelligences, harvesting mind, pre-humans. The device in this novel is the creation of an earth composed of a patchwork of different timelines spanning 2 million years of history, culminating in 2037.
This sets up a world that allows exploration of the novelty of intersecting pieces from different timelines. The main plot centers around the events that lead to a battle between the armies Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan, aided by a small group of 21st century people and a contingent of a 19th century British army.
The main characters were well drawn, and I was felt that this world was real and interesting, mainly from the little details that are Baxter's trademark, especially the sense of smell.
Despite my being a huge Clarke and Baxter fan, I came away feeling this was not the best collaboration, certainly weaker than the "light of other days", and the ending had a definite Deux ex Machina problem. Baxter seems to be writing so much these days that maybe he is being stretched a little thin.
Overall this is an interesting read, but not up to the best that either author has written, with regards to theme and content.
(I used to be a little cynical that Baxter collaborated with Clarke to get a career boost from such a distinguished author. But his talent as an author is now so obvious that I have to wonder whether it isn't Clarke who is getting most of the benefit now.)

From the foreword:

Once upon a time in the awe-inspiring city of New York there existed in the verdant borough of the Bronx a square mile police precinct that rivaled the legendary intrigue of the Casbah, that made Dodge City and Tombstone appear to be family towns, a place that found its only equal in the grassy plains of Custer's last stand, a precinct that came to be affectionately known to the four-hundred police officers who manned this historic and tiny outpost as "Fort Apache".

True story of the NYPD busiest and deadliest precinct
By A Customer
Written during the early 1970's, Fort Apache captures in vivid detail what it was like to work in the then busisest and deadliest precinct in New York. Walker describes the neighborhood and the cops who police it with uncanny accuracy. You will ride along with him to shootings, stabbings, muggings, and homicides.Walker captures the frustration and the dedication of the cops assigned to the 41st as they race from call to call in the seemingly endless parade of crime. A must read for those who enjoy true police stories.

Fort Apache - True Grit!
By Sally Mobile
Walker's days in Fort Apache coincide with my growing up years in the South Bronx. Yes, the Bronx was burning! And yes, there were crooks and there were caring, kind people who'd give you the shirt off their backs. This book is gripping and filled with unbelievable stories, however, as we Bronxites know, very real. My hat's off to you Tom Walker. I highly recommend this book!

The Bronx was burning.
By S. Currie
Dated piece of police pulp, if you've ever seen Assault On Precinct 13 you might think this is a movie script. "True" stories, and a few of them will stick with you long after you read this. Grim and nightmarish at parts, hokey at others. Hard to recommend, unless you are a cop...in which case, you probably don't need this book to make you paranoid.
