The Greatest Benefit to Mankind: A Medical History of Humanity (The Norton History of Science), by Roy Porter

"To combine enormous knowledge with a delightful style and a highly idiosyncratic point of view is Roy Porter's special gift, and it makes [this] book . . . alive and fascinating and provocative on every page."―Oliver Sacks, M.D.

Hailed as "a remarkable achievement" (Boston Sunday Globe) and as "a triumph: simultaneously entertaining and instructive, witty and thought-provoking . . . a splendid and thoroughly engrossing book" (Los Angeles Times), Roy Porter's charting of the history of medicine affords us an opportunity as never before to assess its culture and science and its costs and benefits to mankind. Porter explores medicine's evolution against the backdrop of the wider religious, scientific, philosophical, and political beliefs of the culture in which it develops, covering ground from the diseases of the hunter-gatherers to today's threat of AIDS and ebola, from the clearly defined conviction of the Hippocratic oath to the muddy ethical dilemmas of modern-day medicine. Offering up a treasure trove of historical surprises along the way, this book "has instantly become the standard single-volume work in its field" (The Lancet). "The author's perceptiveness is, as usual, scalpel-sharp; his manner genially bedside; his erudition invigorating." - Simon Schama 24 pages of b/w illustrations

Amazon.com Review
Samuel Johnson once called the medical profession "the greatest benefit to mankind." In the 20th century, the quality of that benefit has improved more and more rapidly than at any other comparable time in history. With all the capabilities of modern medicine's practicioners, however, we as a people are as worried about our health as ever.

Roy Porter, a social historian of medicine the London's Wellcome Institute, has written an dauntingly thick history of how medical thinking and practice has risen to the challenges of disease through the centuries. But delve into its pages, and you'll find one marvelous bit of history after another. The obvious highlights are touched upon--Hippocrates introduces his oath, Pasteur homogenizes, Jonas Salk produces the polio vaccine, and so on--but there's also Dr. Francis Willis's curing of The Madness of King George, W. T. G. Morton's hucksterish use of ether in surgery, and research on digestion conducted using a man with a stomach fistula (if you don't know what that means, you may not want to know). Porter is straightforward about his deliberate focus on Western medical traditions, citing their predominant influence on global medicine, and with The Greatest Benefit to Mankind, he has produced a volume worthy of that tradition's legacy.

From Library Journal
Porter examines what healers have done and the impact of their ideas and actions. His focus is on Western medicine "because Western medicine has developed in ways which made it uniquely powerful and...uniquely global." (LJ 2/15/98)

From The New England Journal of Medicine
There has not been a book of this scope since Garrison's An Introduction to the History of Medicine (Philadelphia: W.B. Saunders), the fourth edition of which appeared in 1929. In reviving the single-authored, encyclopedic, universal history, Roy Porter seeks to make serviceable for the 21st-century reader a model that ultimately derives from the positivistic German medical handbuch of the 19th century. That he has mixed success is probably due more to the way readers and writers have changed than to any deficiencies on his part.

Best known for his prolific contributions to the social history of medicine, especially the history of popular healers and mental illness, Porter here demonstrates a confident familiarity with the "great doctors" and much else. Although discussions of the former constitute the core of the book, discussions of the latter are substantive and brilliantly condensed and conveyed. Porter's recurrent examinations of epidemiology, public health and demography, medical institutions, the social role of medicine and its practitioners, women and medicine, and treatment of mental disorders at various periods reveal admirably how medical historiography has broadened and deepened since Garrison's era.

Nearly half the text of this book follows a chronologic course from prehistoric times to the end of the 18th century (including surveys of Islamic, Indian, and Chinese medicine), whereas the past two centuries are approached thematically and, as Porter acknowledges, selectively. There are chapters on "Medicine, State, and Society" and "Medicine and the People," as well as chapters dealing with medical practice and research.

Throughout the book, Porter presents masterly introductory and concluding summaries of each section in a fluent, often amusing, and sometimes irreverent style. The text is enlivened by numerous quotes from lay and medical contemporaries. Although respecting his universalist goal, Porter explains that Western medicine receives the most attention because it has largely triumphed around the world, and he draws the majority of his historical case examples of professional and social developments from Great Britain (his own area of research).

What, then, are the problems with The Greatest Benefit to Mankind? The apparently few factual errors (several with respect to Vesalius, and the erroneous statement that Dr. Guillotin invented the instrument named after him), which are inevitable in such an ambitious survey, do not pose a serious problem, nor does the judicious coverage and balanced interpretation of medical history. Instead, as the extremely informative 45-page list of further readings (usefully rated by Porter with stars for those he has found most helpful) indicates, the problem is that medical historiography, particularly since around 1980, has experienced such a boom in quantity, quality, and diversity that no single-volume total history can hope to do more than briefly summarize while pointing the reader toward more extensive sources. Although readable, this book is dauntingly crammed with information that moves by at a rapid clip. It is likely to overwhelm the novice but hold few surprises for the specialist. It will probably find its greatest use as a modern, comprehensive, and reliable reference work, a point of entry to the literature and a valuable aid to those teaching the subject.

Remeber the days of pulverised crocodile dung...
By Mark Graham
During my time studying medicine I constantly found myself skipping between books, unable to locate all the historical information I was seeking in one volume. Would that I had "The Greatest Benefit to Mankind" back then! It seems that Roy Porter's students had the same issue which is what inspired the teacher-turned-author to write this book.

Porter's historical account of medicine and healing is fascinating and delves deep to reveal how people's attitudes toward medicine has changed over the years, including the big breakthroughs. While the book covers a global history, it is primarily European - which is explained by the fact that "Western medicine has developed in ways which made it uniquely powerful and... uniquely global." Sounds a bit like the power of imperialism...

The book is a refreshing read and is certainly anything but boring. His tone is comical, engaging, enlightening, and that of a lecturer all at once. Porter has structured his work perfectly and the chapter titles give you the option to quickly look up what you need to know if you're in a hurry. Perfect if you're a student! If you are simply interested in medical history this is a must-read, but be sure to also look at Sexuality: An Illustrated History.

Mistakes Will Irritate
By bob froat
Mr. Porter is in need of a better editor. Did Plato really live between 427 and 437 BC, dying at the age of negative ten? Although the typos are funny, most of the errors are actual failures to research or understand concepts. Asclepius's sign, for instance, is not called the caduceus. Rinderpest is not canine distemper (though they share the same genus), the word literally translates as "cattle plague!" These irritating errors were all found in the first 50 pages, and they keep coming. Today a googling can tell you this kind of stuff in less than a minute. I suspect this book was written without any electronic aids besides a word processor, in a time when readers had to take authors at their word. It's lazy. It's boring. It's not written to be easily read. A few bizarrely arranged sentences made me think I was having a stroke. It's like listening to a lecturing professor who you suspect is going senile.

From Publishers Weekly
Covering the writing waterfront-from basics on verb tense to the value of forming a "support group"-Poynter Institute vice president Clark offers tips, tricks and techniques for anyone putting fingers to keyboard. The best assets in Clark's book are in the "workshop" sections that conclude each chapter and list strategies for incorporating the material covered in each lesson (minimize adverbs, use active verbs, read your work aloud). Though some suggestions are classroom campy ("Listen to song lyrics to hear how the language moves on the ladder of abstraction" and "With some friends, take a big piece of chart paper and with colored markers draw a diagram of your writing process"), Clark's blend of instruction and exercise will prove especially useful for teachers. One exercise, for instance, suggests reading the newspaper and marking the location of subjects and verbs. Another provides a close reading of a passage from The Postman Always Rings Twice to look at the ways word placement and sentence structure can add punch to prose. Clark doesn't intend his guide to be a replacement for classic style guides like Elements of Style, but as a companion volume, it does the trick.

From Booklist
The author, vice president of the Poynter Institute School of Journalism, wants you to understand that a tool isn't the same thing as a rule. A tool is something designed to help you, not constrict you. The 50 tools discussed here take writers through the process of storytelling in prose, from the basic (construct a sentence with a subject and a verb) to the advanced (make your characters archetypes, not stereotypes). Many of Clark's rules are technical, having to do with such matters as punctuation and tense, but some of them are more thematically oriented (for example, discussions of the proper uses of foreshadowing and suspense). Use the tools when you like, the author says, and throw them away when it suits you. Just know what it is you're throwing away and why. This is a useful tool for writers at all levels of experience, and it's entertainingly written, with plenty of helpful examples. David Pitt

"Demystifying the act of writing."
By E. Bukowsky
Roy Peter Clark invites aspiring writers "to imagine the act of writing less as a special talent and more as a purposeful craft." In his "Writing Tools: 50 Essential Strategies for Every Writer," Clark urges the reader to "think of writing as carpentry, and consider this book your toolbox." The goal is to take away the fright and nausea that accompanies writer's block, and to make every writer more proficient at expressing himself.

Clark divides his book into four sections: "Nuts and Bolts," "Special Effects," "Blueprints," and "Useful Habits." Within these divisions, the author clearly and concisely presents his tools; he also includes excerpts from the works of outstanding writers to illustrate each point. For instance, Tool 22 is "Climb up and down the ladder of abstraction." The writer should know when to use concrete examples and when to reach for "higher meaning." Avoid the treacherous middle rungs of the ladder where "bureaucracy and technocracy lurk," and where euphemisms and meaningless phrases abound. Clark cites Updike and a baseball writer named Thomas Boswell to show the reader how it's done. Tool 38 exhorts us to "Prefer archetypes to stereotypes." We should beware of heavy-handed symbols and strive for subtlety. Although it is tempting to fall back on familiar phrases and well-worn ideas, a writer should aspire to cultivate his own distinctive voice. To get his message across, Clark cites a passage from James Joyce's tale "The Dead." Each tool is followed by a "workshop," with several practice exercises.

Some of the tools mentioned in this book are far from unique--most writing handbooks encourage us to make every word count and vary sentence length--but there are a few noteworthy tips that stand out. For example, Clark discusses how to "establish a pattern, then give it a twist," and how to "mix narrative modes" using the broken line technique. A clever writer knows when to move his lens back to broaden his perspective and when to zoom in for a close-up on his subject.

There is no shortage of excellent books on the art of writing. Along with "On Writing Well," by William Zinsser, and Strunk and White's "The Elements of Style," I recommend "Spunk and Bite," by Arthur Plotnik, "How Not to Write," by Wiliam Safire, and "A Dash of Style," by Noah Lukeman. All of these guides, as well as Roy Peter Clark's "Writing Tools," take some of the mystery out of writing and make it a craft accessible to all.

Baking better prose
By A. Leary
Maybe the best way for me to describe Roy Clark's Writing Tools 50 Essential Strategies for Every Writer is to use the following analogy: I can bake good brownies. Not the world's best brownies, but they get the job done - brownie-wise, that is. I'd like to make better brownies, but I'm not sure what I should do differently. Better cocoa? Smaller pan? More butter? I never know what to change, so I just keep making the same mediocre brownies. The same applies to my writing. I know it could be better - I just can't figure out how to change it.

Enter Mr. Clark's wise and wonderful book, Writing Tools 50 Essential Strategies for Every Writer, and suddenly I've got a myriad of new ideas! Clark gives struggling and aspiring writers a neatly organized "toolbox" full of models, practices, examples, and "what-not-to-dos." Conveniently arranged into four sections, each portion of the book addresses different spheres of writing. The first, "Nuts and Bolts" concentrates on the building blocks of writing - the words, sentences and paragraphs. I found there to be an arithmetic quality to this first section, almost as if Clark was imparting the equations and theorems of good writing.

Toolbox number two, "Special Effects," delves into the less concrete world of how we use language. He identifies it as "tools of economy, clarity, originality and persuasion." In this section he explores all of the tools, or devices a writer can use to help the writer shape his or her authentic voice.

"Blueprints," the title of the third toolbox discusses the structure of stories and reports. If a writer intends to take his readers on a path of discovery, enlightenment and wonder then the writer must be able to construct a trail that is enticing, engaging and well-lit. The tools of this third section discuss different kinds of narratives, foreshadowing and the dreaded "outline."

The final section, "Useful Habits" is generous and supportive therapy for the would-be writer. With sage and gentle advice, Clarke reassures us that we are not alone in our bad habits, urges us to learn from our critics and challenges us to "own the tools of our craft."

A special note: Don't miss either the afterword or the dedication. And if you don't know who Donald Murray was, find out. It can only help your writing.

A new guide for an old craft
By Ron Franscell, Author of 'Morgue: A Life in Death'
I am both a newspaperman and and an author. I have followed Roy Peter Clark's teachings for many years, so when this book came along -- comprising many of Clark's extraordinary Poynter essays -- I snapped it up, and am glad I did.

Clark is a clear writer who doesn't clutter your thinking with 50-cent words and two-dollar concepts. He's plain-spoken and real, and his advice can be lifted off his page and immediately applied to yours. He gives you the tools.

This is a must-read for anyone who wants to tell a story better. Not just a newspaper article -- any kind of story. And not just young, wannabe writers-in-training. There's plenty in this book with which veteran storytellers can hone their skills.

Engineering Fluid Mechanics, by Clayton T. Crowe, Donald F. Elger, John A. Roberson, Barbara C. Williams

Connecting the math and theory of fluid mechanics to practical applications can be a difficult process. Engineering Fluid Mechanics builds on the success of previous editions to help engineers learn how to apply concepts by keeping them engaged and active throughout the book. Simple and effective examples show how key equations are utilized in practice, and step-by-step descriptions provide details into the processes that engineers follow. Each chapter also outlines the three most important things they will be able to accomplish once the concepts are learned. With its physical/visual approach, engineers will quickly gain an intuitive understanding of the principles.

Just going with the (supercritical) flow...
By Amazon Customer
I had to buy this book for a course in fluid mechanics last semester, which turned out to be one of my favorite courses. That was due mainly to the fact that I had an amazing professor, but it was largely supported by the ease of use of this book. Reference sheets were quick and easy to use, and proved themselves invaluable when I had to look up numbers or equations in stressful times. The presentation of the material is very clear, and written in a way that is easy to understand so you can focus on the theory and the ideas, not on running to get a dictionary to look up big, complex words and their meanings (...not that an engineer would own a dictionary...or know how to use a non-internet-based one, lol).

WARNGING! CUIDADO! My only real point to pick with this book is that someone did a poor job editing it. The layout of the chapter problems is such that the diagrams for some are on different pages than the accompanying text, or located several problems before or after in the most awkward positions, meaning you really have to pay attention to the figure number to prevent drawing the wrong picture/information (which I have done several times).

And, to make matters worse, some problems actually don't have all the info needed to complete them! Several problems had info cut off, or just not present, in their diagrams.

While those are just temporary, minor annoyances and shouldn't deter anyone from buying this book, just be aware that they are present. That's the only reason this got a 4 instead of a 5.

Great book for a Fluid Mechanics introductory engineering class!
By P. Perselis
I am writing this as an engineering student at Brown University, RI, USA. I think it is helpful -and less biased- when students write reviews of the books they are using.

This is a well-written book that covers all the appropriate material to be taught in an introductory Fluid Mechanics course in an engineering curriculum. In my opinion, the format of every chapter is clear and gradually guides the reader to grasp the essence of the concepts included. It includes plenty of figures to illustrate several phenomena or to help derive equations. Some figures are confusing though and need to include more discussion.
The Appendices of the book are clearly labeled and easy to use; this is true for figures, graphs and tables. I believe that this is very important since I used books in the past which included very unorganized tables and I couldn't figure out what I was looking for!
There are many problems at the end of every chapter ranging from basic to more complex ones. Problems are grouped according the way the chapter is divided into concepts. Perhaps the book lacks general conceptual problems and/or real-life application problems, but our Professor provided this material.

Overall, I would recommend this textbook to other students who are interested to get a smooth and paced introduction to Fluid Mechanics and to teachers who want to supplement their lecture with a reliable study-guide.

There have to be better options out there
By Amazon Customer
I will preface this by saying that I haven't gone out and searched every fluid mechanics book to find something better. I never deal with fluids and I never plan to deal with them again. The only thing I found that was useful from this book was Bernouli's equation, but you can learn everything on that topic from free references rather than paying for this book. I found the book to be confusing, poorly worded, and lacking in real-world examples and example problems. The text is boring and found in abundance, and I simply don't have the attention span or the desire to read a wall of text about fluid mechanics. I got an A in the class, but it wasn't because of this book. Thank goodness I never have to pretend to care about fluids again.

Panorama of Creation, by Dr. Carl Baugh

This book is based on Dr. Baugh's work at the Creation Evidences Museum. Fact: Before the great Flood the world was encased in a compressed water canopy in which the hydrogen atoms bonded to form a superconductive firmament bathing the world in pink-dominated light. Fact: Before the Flood the oxygen content of the atmosphere was much greater than it is today to allow for bigger animals, and a higher oxygen content in the water made possible abundant marine life of enormous sizes. Fact: Plant life was much larger and possessed higher vitamin and mineral content to sustain large life forms like the dinosaur.

Still believe the lie of evolution? How we are evolving instead of de-volving? Learn the real story of the earth, and it's true age. The reason people believe in evolution is because if the OTHER view is true, then they have to be accountable to that creator.

Marcel Proust: The Fictions of Life and of Art, by Leo Bersani

Leo Bersani is an eminent literary critic whose influential work spans half a century. His vast, in many ways unclassifiable, oeuvre has traversed and blurred the boundaries of the disciplines of modern French literature, literary criticism, psychoanalysis, art history, film theory, philosophical aesthetics, and masculinity studies and sexuality studies. Oxford University Press published Bersani's first book, on Proust, in 1965, but the work has long been out of print. This new edition comes in response to a recent renewal of interest among philosophers of literature, among others, and features a new preface from the author.

In Other Words, by C. J. Moore

When ideas fail, words come in handy. But sometimes you can't find the right word, and what you want to say can't be found in the dictionary. English has its limitations, but the expression you're searching for may exist in another language. In Other Words is a unique collection of well-known and absolutely obscure "untranslatables"―linguistic gems that convey a feeling or notion with satisfying precision yet resist simple translation.

This quirky lexicon of hard-to-translate words gives the reader a new way to look at the world and how words relate to us. The words are arranged by region or country of origin, and a brief introduction to each section―each done by a respected translator―gives insight into the culture of the people as well as the language. Each of these singular words is cleverly and thoroughly defined, with interesting details and references throughout. The search for that elusive mot juste may be over.

From Publishers Weekly
Translation is tricky, especially when the language belongs to a people whose culture is very different from one's own. In this short but enthusiastic book, Moore, a linguist, selects from languages across the world words and phrases that are impossible to translate neatly into English. In many cases, the difficulty arises because our culture simply doesn't share the same experiences as others. For instance, the Cantonese word gagung literally means "bare sticks," but represents the growing group of men who will not be able to find a wife because China's one-child policy, and desire for sons, has reduced the proportion of women. Other untranslatable words are those used for a feeling or situation that English only describes in a roundabout way, such as the indigenous word from Tierra del Fuego, mamihlapinatapei, which connotes "an expressive and meaningful silence," romantic or otherwise. Moore ranges through 10 different groups of languages (ancient and classical, indigenous, Nordic and African among them) and breaks a few into individual tongues. He introduces each with a few entertaining anecdotes and literary quotes to provide context, and his style in the definitions is equally witty and accessible. Strangely, the entries are not alphabetized, and some have meanings that are more familiar than he implies, particularly those found in the section on Sanskrit, which is made up entirely of words that have already entered the English vocabulary, such as guru and mantra. Overall, this book will fascinate anyone who loves linguistic oddities or has ever felt "lost in translation."

Beyond the Phrasebook...the Unintentional Barriers of Language
By Ed Uyeshima
When I grew up around my Japanese-speaking mother, she often used the phrase "yoko meshi" when she would get particularly frustrated about having to speak English. Only in hindsight do I see that she was using a particularly Japanese expression of linguistic frustration. This is one of the 250-plus words and phrases that language expert Christopher J. Moore has compiled from around the world that do not have a simple translation in English. Yet what they do convey are life experiences with which we Americans can relate.

Words that originate within one culture might as easily have been produced by another at any time. But often one culture may recognize a more immediate need for a word to express an emotion or situation. Consequently there are inconsistencies in how we describe commonalties we have in the human experience. And then there are the cases of words and phrases he introduces that seem specific to their native cultures such as the Czech word, litost, which is a state of torment only experienced by Czechs where they have the sudden sight of their own misery. Bottom line, languages develop in response to a culture's needs and interests. Moore has provided a nice, light tome that clearly expresses our cultural differences through words that truly get lost in translation. It's a great way to get a smidgen of what another culture may be like.

A veritable buffet for logophiles
By David Edwards
Believe me, I really wanted to give this book five stars. It is five-star quality in almost every respect. The only reason I didn't is, IMO, it gives unduly short shrift to Spanish. And of the handful or so Spanish words that are included, at least three are characteristic of Spain. It seems to me the author missed a great opportunity to introduce readers to the multifaceted Spanish of Latin America. I for one would have loved to see the word "carteluo" in there, since I have yet to find a satisfactory definition/description anywhere else. Yet try as I might to identify other shortcomings, that is the only criticism I have of this book.

Moore somehow manages to make up for all the deserving words that didn't make it. He shows particular deference to German and French, and I absolutely reveled in his selections from the lengua franca of the Deutschelanders. Surely my auto insurer wouldn't mind being introduced to a geisterfahrer or two. And the mental images conjured up by the words schadenfreude and korinthenkacker are the cure for a bad day. I also enjoyed the introduction, where readers are treated to a glimpse of the Finnish concept of sisu. The selection of Yiddish words is admirable as well, and I wouldn't be surprised if Reader's Digest ever asked to reprint it as a vocab builder.

The smiles, laughter and sheer enjoyment I get from reading this book make me forget I paid for it. I have used it as a reference book, a momentary diversion, and an extended read when I need something lighthearted. I think it nicely complements Ostler's scholarly, but no less entertaining, tome "Empires of the Word". Don't miss that one if you like "In Other Words". And Mr. Moore, if you read this review and ever plan a second edition of this book, may I suggest you consider including the Japanese word "mokusatsu." I've read that the inherent ambiguity in that word might have played a key role in the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Enlightening look at language and culture
By Dennis Laycock
I just finished reading two books about language: "In Other Words" and a book called "Zounds!" that looked into the origins of interjections.

The author of "Zounds!" gushed about the illustrator of his book, remarking about how much they added. In reality, to me, they looked like hastily drawn cartoons on the same plane as Marmaduke, as far as drawing skill and wit were involved.

Now we have "In Other Words," which is filled with outstanding illustrations, and not a word about them from author Christopher Moore. The illustrations, done in some sort of African or Asian style of which I am unfamiliar, excellently and literally demonstrate some of the stranger phrases described in the book, and truly do add to the experience.

The book itself is an interesting and enlightening read. Moore introduces each chapter (divided by language group), then skillfully describes several untranslatable phrases from each one. Either Moore has an amazing grasp of many different languages, or he did some incredible research, because his writing seems to show a true understanding.

I was also pleased by the physical book itself. The pages are a heavy weight and it's a perfect size. It's not often the size and feel of a book deserve a compliment, but there you have it.

One complaint is that the book ends abruptly, with no final wrap-up or comments by the author. Even more than that, I would have liked to see a list of English words and phrases deemed untranslatable into other languages (Moore mentions the word "cool" at one point; surely there are many others).

But overall, worth reading - if anything, to understand more how diverse the cultures on this world are.

The Mythic Bestiary: The Illustrated Guide to the World's Most Fantastical Creatures, by Tony Allan

Dragons and firebirds, fairies and orcs: these are just a few of the residents of The Mythic Bestiary. A whole menagerie of make-believe beings from the earth, water, and air inhabit these stunningly written and eye-catching pages, from Japan’s Yukki-onna, a beautiful but deadly spirit who appeared to stranded travelers, to the two-headed venomous snake Amphisbaena, which hailed from the imagination of the Greek poet Nicander. Many are hybrids such as the Quetzalcoatl, the Aztecs’ gorgeous combination of serpent and bird; others, more monstrous, tested the mettle of ancient heroes. A few, like the gigantic winged lion, lammasu served as guardian angels, warding against evil spirits.
This guide gives not only a taxonomy of size, appearance, habitat, and powers, but also provides vivid descriptions of the cultures that produced them.

Not a bad book
By Chevelle_67
I bought this book more to help with ideas for new drawings. There were some beasts in here that I had completely forgotten about. I also noticed that there were a few missing. In all I am glad that I bought this book.

Simply Splendid
By GorJess
I just love this book. The book is exactly as it appears in the image, though unfortunately the viewer cannot see the splendid illustrations inside. The author of this title, Tony Allan, has written numerous books of similar kind and so is very well informed in studies of the mythological - this results in a GREAT wealth of (interesting) information and where necessary there are references to contemporary incarnations of some of the mythological creatures in the book, such as those in Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" and Rowling's "Harry Potter". I highly recommend this title to anyone with even the vaguest interest in mythology.
Hope this review is helpful =]

Not for young children
By Another reviewer
A very interesting book, but this was a gift for my 7 yr old son and, unfortunately, it's not appropriate for young children. While I was prepared for some mild nudity in depictions of mermaids and sirens, I was not prepared to explain why succubi "visited men (particularly monks) at night, giving them impure thoughts and wet dreams." (p. 180) Still, with the appropriate audience, it's an interesting read that explains who all these creatures are the keep popping up in both classic and modern literature.

What if there was a futuristic city in America?
By maruski
What would it be like to live in a city of the future? What if someone had already started one of these futuristic cities, and we could visit it today? Pat McCord's "The Rings of Venus" imagines just such a scenario. Nick Hammond gets a reprieve from school when is dad arranges for the family to move into a futuristic city in central Florida (based on the philosophies of futurist and designer Jacque Fresco). Leaving a typical American neighborhood, the family begins a very different kind of life where self-replicating machines build structures in one day, cars drive themselves and schools as Nick knows them are non-existent. Not all is paradise, though. The only other kid Nick's age was sent to Venus by the Florida detention system and is determined to destroy the city. Even worse, the most beautiful girl Nick has ever known, Alana, may not be what she seems. The plot and sub plots in this story make a fascinating read.

What is so cool about this book is the way the author manages to present the whole idea as believable; as if there really could be such cities just a car ride away. The amazing thing is that while this city is almost magical in its ability to address human needs, the reader clearly sees how today's technology could become the basis for this kind of living in the future, leaving the reader with a bit of wide-eyed wonder and thinking "what if. . . ?" Not just for kids--everyone will love this book, with graphics by Jacque Fresco.

Fabulous fiction. . .or fact?
By Becky Masterman
While geared for young adult, this old adult was amazed by the utter believability of a totally automated society. The Venus Project actually exists in Florida, and McCord has taken that reality and pushed the envelope to maximum capacity. With food coming up through the floor and machines creating buildings on their own, the barriers between fact and science fiction are blurred. While supportive of the project the author skillfully crafts some 'trouble in paradise,' which I won't reveal here. An entertaining read and, even better, one that will spark a lot of discussion with your kids.

Great Intro to American Politics Textbook
By Jill U.
Excellent intro to politics text. I highly recommend it for a classroom or for anyone really who wants to sit down with a plain-spoken piece to get you to understand our government. Whether it is for someone with little knowledge as to who this vast bureaucracy works, or for someone with a fairly good knowledge of it all - I don't think it will disappoint.
I think what I appreciated the most was the honesty that the text was written. The authors also included a good amount of humor to emphasize the point (in cartoon, comic, Top 10 List, etc), in order to keep a reader interested.
I think this text is also a good reference as well, as there are numerous court cases and explicit examples of gov't at work - that if you are ever at a loss for "what was it that happened?" or "what does that term mean?" Things are extremely easy to find and be referred to.
Good works.

One Book for Sister Sarah
By Edwin C. Pauzer
The reflection from the light shone on the book and back on me from the shelf, as I felt another impulse purchase coming on. I reflected how I had only one political science course throughout college. Not unlike the puppy dog at the kennel that licks you through the cage, the book was saying, "Pick me." I did.

My twentieth edition, hard cover copy provides everything we should know about how our government works, and therefore would be an excellent source for 98% of our population. Besides providing a DVD for interactive simulation of government working, it contains a copy of the U.S. Constitution (my fourth), beautiful maps, and illustrations of various demographics, including the breakdown of electoral votes. The book also covers everything you might want to know about balancing the nation's checkbook, running for Congress, who's got the power?, lobbying in America, a political survey asking readers what they believe, and much, much more.

For those who never had the benefit of such a course, or wondered if they missed something about politics through an education of coincidental learning and hard knocks, this book would be a thorough and ideal learning tool.

It is a frequent source of reference. I'm even thinking of sending a copy to Sarah Winkums.

Gives great insight to American government
By R. Verma
I was amazed at how interesting this book was. I used it for a class I was taking, and I had many preconceived notions that I would not like the class. I was very surprised that everything was so interesting. The author has gathered all of the latest information that was available during the publication of the book, and intergrates the ideas and concepts very well. The book gives you information that a normal person of the "general public" would not have known. I found that every chapter had something to learn that benefited me and that everything in this book applied to me as an American. Great text for my online class; I'm glad we used this book.
