A Very Special Critter arrived today & my daughter and I have already read it. We always enjoy the critter books but this one is going to be a favorite. There is a new student joining critter's class who arrives in a wheelchair looking very frightened. Before long critter and his friend's realize the new boy is no different than the rest of them and is good at some things (like volleyball & math) and needs help with others things just like critter (reaching high items). It's a sweet tale of accepting the differences in all of us and my daughter was riveted to the pages

Smearing Set's name since the Hyksos

The only thing that saves this book is the colorful art. Other than that, It gets Egyptian mythology constantly wrong. I love how they replace Set with Thoth in one tale because Set is supposed to be our devil figure, then it calls Set a liar for claiming he protects Ra. Archeological proof has never shown Thoth fighting Apep, always Set or Bastet. Our Education these days, folks. Teaching children to think in black and white, regardless of well known evidence. (Yes, I understand Egyptian mythology can be contradictory, but that doesn't mean we should make stuff up when we are trying to be educational.)

Beautifully written!

I am a 7th grade language arts teacher and I could not wait for this book to arrive. I already own Napoli's Treasury of Greek Mythology, and her Egyptian storybook is equally as wonderful as the Greek one. Napoli writes with such a compelling sense of voice that readers are pulled into the stories. Egyptian mythology is complicated, especially to young readers, but Napoli is a masterful storyteller and she is able to create such beautiful, accessible stories from a complex, ancient set of stories. She has clearly done her research, as there is a really helpful section explaining information such as the origins of names, the variations of details over time and her decision process as she wrote, how the Greeks influenced the stories and names. The stories also have inset boxes with nonfiction information about details related to the stories -- funeral practices, mummification, hieroglyphs, building of pyramids, legally accepted practices at the time, desert life, etc). The illustrations are gorgeous. I would say this book is geared for middle school and above readers, but would be well suited for read-alouds with younger children. It's a must-have for anyone teaching about ancient Egyptian society and mythology. Love, love, LOVE this book!!!

The original book is the BEST purchase if you are looking for just ONE purchase. THIS book is the STUDY GUIDE. It does not contain any prayers or content from the actual book. It is ONLY a book of study questions to act as a companion to the original book. If you are in a study group, looking to lead one, or even if you just want to study more on your own, you want to purchase this in addition to the original book, the study questions make you think and evaluate your relationship with your spouse and focus on improving your prayer life. I highly recommend all of the books; just be aware of which one you are purchasing, each series uses the same cover art on all three books.

Excellent text gets better

This already excellent text written by philosophy professor Dr.Bruce N.Waller just got better. It is an excellent choice as an introductory text in this field or for those of us who just want to understand the ethics not only of classical philosphical problems but of everyday challenges in our shared life in society. Waller uses a very readable style to explain the nature of these issues along with relevant readings.

Decent textbook

This was an assigned textbook for my ethics class. It was a decent enough textbook. Although I truly despise the narration by the author telling you what to think.

I truly don't understand why philosophy teachers don't just assign reading assignments by Actual philosophers rather than some guys interpretation of them.

An adequate introduction

Bruce N. Waller's "Consider Ethics: Theory, Readings, and Contemporary Issues" is for the most part an author-written text. Thus, the word "Readings" in the subtitle, while not totally inaccurate, is somewhat misleading. Other than the last chapter, which contains readings on current practical moral issues, the rest of the book is Waller's own description and analysis of the issues, with only an extremely brief primary-source reading (typically of three or four pages in length) at the end of the chapter.

Thankfully, Waller's discussion of the issues is fairly insightful and balanced. The issues he covers include most of the standard topics in theoretical ethics: utilitarianism, social contract ethics, egoism, relativism, pragmatism, virtue and care ethics, moral realism, free will and responsibility, etc. However, as already indicated, the "contemporary issues" section is confined to the last chapter. If one is looking for a text for an applied ethics class, this is not the one. Once again, let me stress that this is primarily a text in ethical theory.

That said, I will give my qualified recommendation. If one wants a text in theoretical ethics with few readings from other philosophers, Waller's book will do. However, the price, which is more than $90 new, is a consideration. There are excellent books in ethics on the market that can be had for less.

A voice-driven story that gives Carver a run for his money

Lepucki's very short book is a captivating story driven by voice. The insufferable protagonist is a plain, self-loathing girl with an incisive power of observation and the unfiltered honesty and (unreliable) self-awareness of very intelligent but unmotivated people. The character takes us in the second person singular through a fleeting and unremarkable love affair (that none-the-less changes everything). It is a very American story in that it takes an everyday subject, plain characters, and the quotidian of events that are unremarkable to the flat eye of the untrained observer and turns them into well-lit, textured pages filled with wisdom and insight about life and emotions, by focusing a mature writer's eye on the significance of these events, and taking them far by the sheer power of the voice and the writer's turn-of-phrases and turn-of-images. It reminds me of Carver's writing in "What we talk about when we talk about love", though I enjoy more Lepucki's deeper plunges of self-awareness than Carver's utter flatness and his characters' unmanned drift.
One can also say that the story is very L.A. and I can swear that I have been in that coffee house and that bar and that diner. I swear I have also been in that apartment and in her tub. I may even have dated that girl before.
The book ends abruptly, as if the story fell from a sudden cliff, in what is apparently a signature Lepucki literary characteristic. The flavor of the story lingers in your mouth, perhaps because, as with any good dish, if you are left wanting more, you appreciate the exquisite culinary delicacy much more than if you were served a full plate.
This book is too short, though, and it leaves you thirsty for more Lepucki. One can only hope that she publishes a new book soon, perhaps a longer one, or otherwise, one filled with several short stories.

Little book (3x5) packed with power.

This is a surprisingly deep story. Beneath the modern self-conscious patter (which works incredibly well!) Lepucki reveals her character -partly through confessions that keep bubbling through, but more importantly through the scenes she shares with us, the subtext inside them.
It's a beautiful piece of work, and I look forward her new novel.

`Have you ever heard of Imagine Land?'

Los Angles native Edan Lepucki graduated from Oberlin College and the Iowa Writer's Workshop and is a staff writer at The Millions, (an online magazine offering coverage on books, arts, and culture since 2003) whose short fiction has been published in Los Angeles Times Magazine, Meridian, FiveChapters, McSweeney's and Narrative Magazine. She is the 2009 winner of the prestigious James D. Phelan Award. Her first novel, California, will be published by Little, Brown in July 2014. Why is it necessary to list facts? Because this young writer is making a significant impact and this novella IT YOU'RE NOT YET LIKE ME introduces a writer with keen comedic skills and a solid grasp of social commentary about current relationship peculiarities.

Joellyn is the somewhat dissociative, messy, single narrator of this little `love story'. She is unsure of how to interact with men, a situation we observe in her meeting and eventually dating the newly arrived San Francisco writer Zachary who is unremarkable, unnoticeable, doughy, and obviously new at encounters. Joellyn wears her Grannies underwear on first dates so that she won't be tempted to undress on the first time out. But she somehow has a pity break for Zachary and ends up taking him to her filthy apartment (Zachary likewise lives in moldy squalor), and a relationship of sorts begins. Joellyn also has an encounter with a handsome actor Dickens, but that haughty encounter the first go round results in little - until the end of Joellyn and Zachary when Dickens enters the picture again and impregnates her.

A short story of tow people interacting, but the lines Lepucki gives Joellyn are priceless. Brief example, when looking at the handsome Dickens' smile the second time around she state, `A girl could sleep on the pink of those gums. I imagined swinging form the punching bag of his uvula.' Consider that every page is punched with one-liners like that in addition to language use that is up there with the pros and you'll likely agree that here is a fresh very delightful new voice in contemporary literature. I feel pretty qualified to review this book

I feel pretty qualified to review this book, as I have made it through the entire thing, front to back and have personally prepared all 90 recipes that are included! And I must say it is incredible. Lissa does an outstanding job laying everything out including what ingredients to have on hand at all times, the equipment needed, the prep for recipes, the recipes themselves and staying true to the 80-10-10 diet with a reasonable daily caloric intake for the average adult. The food was delicious, and it's impossible to select just one favorite recipe! Besides the recipes, to me, the best part about the book is that she gives daily shopping lists and is smart about using ingredients to save money and time if you follow it front to back (which I did). If you are interested in a raw vegan diet, the 80-10-10 way of eating, or just want to incorporate more healthy choices into your diet, then this book is definitely worth it! Here are just a few photos of my creations from her book!

Great recipes...if you can read them.

This is a really nice cookbook to use for lower fat high carb raw vegan eating. There is a picture with each recipe too. I would have given five stars if the words were not so small. It is very difficult to follow because the print is too small and everything is crammed on one page. It would be much better if the book was larger to accommodate the print.

I love Melissa's IG account and YouTube channel. I have been following her for awhile and her posts are very inspiring and the recipes I have tried so far have been good. The only one I have tried that was a fail was the "taco meat"; and I think that one would have been more appropriate for a food processor than a blender.

I feel there is some conflicting info in this book though. She stresses eating very low fat and even says at the end that she actually eats lower fat than the recipes contained in the book, however many of the recipes contain nuts or avocados. She says she follows 80-10-10 but only sort of; it's a bit confusing.

This plan is impractical for people who don't work from home. My life does not revolve around meal prep. As much as I would love to, I don't have time to soak nuts and sprouts and change sprout water 3 times a day. I'm just simply not home. As another reviewer said, the type is too small and light-colored. Everything is crammed on the page and the steps aren't all together. For example, some of the recipes require soaking things in advance but that is in a small paragraph 2 pages before the main recipe.

It's a great book and definitely worth adding to your raw food book library, however I don't think that it's as practical as it could be.

These are okay

I guess I was hoping for either multiple choice questions, or bulleted points or just SOMETHING else.
It seems like many of these flash cards may be duplicitous.
They are wordy, and not easy/clear/concise, making much simpler to remember.
I've actually only made it halfway through them.
I guess I could also better evaluate after I take my AOCNP.

About the Author

Eric Voegelin (1901-1985) was one of the most original and influential philosophers of our time. Born in Cologne, Germany, he studied at the University of Vienna, where he became a professor of political science in the Faculty of Law. In 1938, he and his wife, fleeing Hitler, emigrated to the United States. They became American citizens in 1944. Voegelin spent much of his career at Louisiana State University, the University of Munich, and the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. During his lifetime he published many books and more than one hundred articles. The Collected Works of Eric Voegelin will make available in a uniform edition all of Voegelin's major writings.

About the EditorEllis Sandoz, Hermann Moyse Jr. Distinguished Professor of Political Science, is Director of the Eric Voegelin Institute for American Renaissance Studies at Louisiana State University. He is the general editor of Voegelin's History of Political Ideas and author or editor of numerous books, including A Government of Laws: Political Theory, Religion, and the American Founding (University of Missouri Press).

A book that calms potential panic in the era of Terrorism

Balance. Perspective. Common sense. Trusting your feelings. A reality check. Those are the watchwords of Gavin de Becker's highly informative, lively and supremely reassuring Fear Less. If I had the money I'd send this book to everyone I know...and especially to those who assign and edit terrorism stories in the broadcast/cable news media.
Touted as "real truth about risk, safety and security in a time of terrorism" his main message (in my words here) is essentially this:"Whooa! Wait a minute: look at the FACTS and take a deep breath." It's a message that needs to be delivered more than ever, after the recent announcement about a suspect's arrest for reportedly looking into making a "dirty bomb."
De Becker contends that in battling terrorism everyone -- citizens AND policy-makers -- can better contribute (and react) if they are more attuned to their intuition. Intuition is not only using common sense, but also being keenly aware of subtle bits of information that spark uneasy feelings. Still others believe intuition is a kind of spiritual voice. Whether it's about your neighbor, someone you see getting on a plane, someone leaving a package in a mall, etc. the author argues: TRUST and MONITOR these little intuitive alarm signals...and don't be afraid to ACT on them (tell authorities and risk being wrong).
This book starts out with a story about about a terrorist plot sound just like one in the year 2002...except that it was a Nazi terrorist plot against the U.S. foiled during WWII. He points to times in history when all seemed bleak...yet the U.S. always survived. And what was so shocking at the time quickly became the new reality: people accepted it and lived with it, and moved on...until the next horror topped the last (and then that was accepted, etc).
In a superb chapter titled Apocalpyse Not Now he debunks myths about biological, chemical and nonmilitary nuclear attack. His point: yes there are indeed WORST CASE scenarios but the realities of what would likely happen, the difficulty of making it happen, and the actual impact if it were to happen are not as simple or catastrophic as the news media may make them sound.
The best chapter isin which in No News At Eleven, he debunks many qualifying and hype phrases used by the news media, especially broadcast and cable networks. His advice: turn off the TV and READ MORE PRINT news. He spares no one (he especially feels Fox News tries to heighten drama) and notes that his criticism of broadcast and cable journalism is aimed mostly at those who make the CHOICES of what to put on and how to package it to attract maximum viewership.
"Every word you hear spoken is another choice, every image, every color -- all choices," he writes. "Combine the words, the graphics, the logos, the music, the urgency, and what you end up with is information hidden behind sensation -- and the sensation is fear."
PERSONAL NOTE: I worked in the news media for nearly 20 years, as a freelance journalist overseas (check my reviewer profile) and then as a newspaper staff writer. There is definitely a news cycle to stories. And fear often generates bigger stories than reassurance. So PLEASE take a deep breath and read Fear Less. These may be scary times but it's not the End of the World (yet).

Seems rushed... somewhat disappointing

Some interesting new vignettes but lacks the power of the original Gift of Fear, a work I consider essential reading and a must own book. If you've already read that book, you really don't need this one. The essential points have already been covered. It's certainly not a bad book by any means, it's just doesn't hold its own against the extremely high standard of his first work. Seems like he rushed this one to press without giving it the full attention it deserves. It's probably worth buying used but I regret paying full price.

To Be Awake, But Not Afraid

"Fear Less" is worth reading, and it is written in a brisk, "self-help" style that makes it easy to digest in a few sittings.
Gavin de Becker's first step is to confront the reader's fears by putting terrorism into perspective. He explains that life is not risk free, terrorism is not new and Americans are much better at stopping terrorists than you might think. Even after September 11, you face a much higher risk of being killed or injured in your car than in a terrorist attack or a plane crash. Thousands of people will die this year from complications caused by the flu--yet many of those who hoarded Cipro probably did not get a flu shot. de Becker's point is that while we should be vigilant about terrorism, we should not stand around and quake in our collective boots.
To help the reader understand where the fear is coming from, de Becker carefully analyzes the endless hand wringing of television news reporters. In the months that followed September 11, I grew very impatient with the stories streaming in from CNN, Fox News, and even the BBC--they just didn't match reality. The war in Afghanistan was supposed to go on for years (wrong), the allied forces were supposed to lose countless aircraft to Stinger missiles (wrong), the fierce Afghan and Al Qaeda warriors were going to bloody our groundtroops (wrong), the terrorists were poised to blow up American bridges and poision "the nation's" water supply (wrong so far), and Americans were hiding under their beds in fear of the next terrorist attack (wrong--everyone I know took a deep breath and kept on flying and living).
Becker zeroes in on the "code words" that television journalists use to mask a weak but scary story. If you learn nothing else from "Fear Less," it will be that you can relax more if you turn off the television and read the newspaper instead.
Having confronted our fears, de Becker offers some helpful guidance about how we can cope with the latest terrorist warnings from the grim and humorless Attorney General Ashcroft. Most of us are not good at identifying suspicious behavior--we rationalize what we see and ignore our intuition. de Becker proposes some suggestions to help us separate the wheat from the chaff, though most of these are too general to be of much practical use.
More helpfully, de Becker describes who among us is in the best position to spot potential terrorist activity as well as what we should be looking for: the list includes the usual suspects (employees of truck rental businesses and sellers of fertiziler), as well as several that are a bit surprising (such as librarians and bookstore owners, who are in a position to observe people with an unhealthy interest in books or internet sites dealing with explosives). He also reviews September 11 and other attacks to explain how terrorist activities can be identified. If people read Chapter 5 of "Fear Less," we will all have a better chance of making sense of Ashcroft's endless warnings and actually spotting some of the terrorist activity we're all worried about.
My biggest criticism of the book is that it is too general, and it reads like a self-help book rather than an analysis of terrorism and what the average citizen can do to oppose it. In de Becker's defense, "Fear Less" was rushed into print to address the fears arising from September 11--it's intended to be, and is marketed as, "self-help/current affairs." The author's prompt response has done us all a service, but I hope that the future will bring us a more comprehensive book--with more concrete examples and advice.
