There is hope for Dota 2 beginners!

"....a common problem that happens is that a lot of new players expect themselves to be really good at the game straight off the bat and become aggravated or upset that they keep either losing matches or not performing as well as they want."

Honestly I could have written the statement above. I have had Dota 2 in my steam library for quite some time now -- I was constantly getting bombarded from friends on my list to play the game, but I found myself feeling like I just couldn't quite grasp it like I have other games. I think part of that is just that it is different from other MOBA's in that I feel like being the weakest link of a 5 person team can really change the game.. On top of that you suffer a lot more as a player when you are killed, and that can take some getting used to (all of this is covered in the history and beginning chapters of the guide).

A key part of this guide for me is the "Starters Build" -- I truly think that all of the information leading up to the build chapter is important and should even be read before purchasing the game as it gives you in great detail the specs needed for the game. However, most people don't look for a guide until after they have already gotten the game, which is okay too. Anyway, the build guide is great for someone like me, who wants to know where I can easily start with a character that will allow me to do okay and still learn the game. This chapter provides that.

What I really liked about this guide is that it gives beginner's a fighting chance at figuring things out before being thrown into the arena. The writing is smooth and easy to understand and doesn't read like a manual. It seems to be written by someone who truly knows and likes the game, and wants to help others, which I feel is extremely important when reading a gaming guide.

It renewed my want to play the game and I highly recommend it.

Good explanation of the game and how to enter it. I guess I was hoping for a tad more strategy. I think the forums are the next logical step as the game is so hero specific. Thanks for the tips, though!

"Ring Twice For Mistress."

Edward Jablonski's FLYING FORTRESS is a classic of aviation literature and is unique as the earliest, best-written "biography" of any aircraft. Sometimes imitated but never duplicated, FLYING FORTRESS is a wonderful read, less military history than memoir, and anyone who does read it comes away with love in their heart for the Boeing B-17, one of the most lethal, effective, rugged, and beautiful (if such a word applies to warplanes) flying machines ever built.

Jablonski takes us through the step-by-step evolution of this airplane, from its earliest wooden strut-and-wire precursors to its ultimate development into the B-29 "atomic" bomber of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The general design of the B-17 proceeded from Boeing's Model 299 to the wartime B-17G, of which almost 9000 were built. Although the "E," "F," and "G" variants were the most common of the more than 12,000 B-17s constructed, the Flying Fortress underwent literally hundreds of modifications and served variously as a heavy bomber, a command plane, a radar platform, an antisubmarine hunter, and even a kind of long-range superfighter during its decade-long career.

The B-17 was as widely distributed as it was modified. Although the Flying Fortress is most commonly associated with the Eighth Air Force based in England, Fortresses served in Italy, Africa and the Pacific theatre as well. The B-17 (along with the B-24) was the backbone of America's Strategic Bombardment program against Germany during World War II. Although the price was steep (about 25% of Fortresses never came home) Strategic Bombardment demonstrably shortened the war by destroying Germany's industrial plant. (Strategic Bombardment really came into its own only with the development of stealth technology and smart bombs, which allowed for pinpoint accuracy in targeting.)

Even more than the plane, Jablonski regales us with tales---some comic, some tragic---of the men who flew these planes and the dangers they faced. Jablonski rejoices in recounting the war stories of these now gray-haired old men (where they've survived), especially the exploits of the "Bloody 100th" Bomb Group (famous to this day as suffering from a Luftwaffe vendetta), and "Rosie's Riveters." Jablonski doesn't much credit the vendetta against the "Century Bombers" except as a pilots' legend, but he does do a wonderful job of bringing to life the exploits of the B-17 crews.

FLYING FORTRESS is rounded out with an extensive technical section (including the pilot's manual) and hundreds of photographs. (Nowadays the Web holds the actual pilot training films, a must see for anyone interested in the B-17.) The only shortcomings of FLYING FORTRESS are the lack of a table of organization for the Army Air Forces, the absence of a brief summary of the postwar history of a few of the more famous planes, and nothing regarding expanded information on insignia and nose art (which is an engrossing subject all on its own).

The Flying Fortress still fascinates, and is still beloved. Much of the continuing public fascination with the B-17 can be attributed largely to this book, which kept the B-17 alive before the Internet made esoteric information generally available.

This book is a "must have" for any collector of air combat books. The best of the best. Excellent collections of factual stories. Completely entertaining. SAVE YOUR MONEY, BUY THE ORIGINAL EDITION

It's been almost 50 years since I bought a copy of the 1965 edition of Jablonski's "Flying Fortress". It was the first book I read about WWII and holds an honored spot on my book shelf. Browsing Amazon recently I came across this "Corrected" edition with a headline that screamed "*Don’t get the wrong edition: Get the corrected edition! This 2014 edition includes corrected material based on Edward Jablonski’s handwritten notes in his file copy of the original publication (ISBN: Paperback 978-1-62654-904-3 and Hardback 978-1-62654-867-1) Knowing full well the shortcomings of Jablonski's original edition I thought it was worth a shot. This book is seriously disappointing, I am returning it and would suggest that anyone who is interested get the original edition instead.

I could find nothing in this book that mentions the supposed corrections or who made them. There is no intro, no forward, no explanation, just the original preface word for word from the original. To my eye this appears to be just a facsimile of the original done on print on demand. This edition has the exact same number of pages as the original. It says Copyright 2014 Edward Jablonski which I find interesting since Mr Jablonski died in 2004. I've spent several days doing side by side readings of random pages and thus far have not found a single word that was different. Even more disappointing is the number of factual errors in the original text that still appear in this "corrected edition". Numerous copies of the original edition available here on Amazon for as little as $8.

every kid can learn to read

The Blue book and Gold book (headway program) were a popular curriculum in the 70s and 80s. It taught phonics. By returning to past curriculum(s) that worked, we can go back to all kids learning to read. I use four books to bring kids up to high school level. The Blue and Gold books headway program, breaking the code (based on Blue and Gold book style) takes the kid to 5th grade level, then finish with Rewards by Sopris West which takes the kid to 10th grade level with speed and proficiency. Four books to move from total non-reader to proficient high school level. Not only amazing...but repeatable.

Breaking the Code and Rewards have newer editions but I am not sure if they are as good as the original.
The blue and gold book are out of print...watch for $20 to $30 used copies.
Rewards at sopris west has updated to a range of books but I have not tried them.

These are the four books I use. One hour per day takes about 4 weeks per book: 16 weeks to proficient readers.
In a Saturday moring program, you can do 4 chapters. It would take between 5 and 6 Saturdays for each book.
I have taken many 12th grade (even special ed) nonreaders through these programs. It works.

The headway program is no longer in print, and even used books are not to be found.

THE book for high end aducation

We are fortunate that old teacher told us about this book. This book was published before American education system lowered the standard... last two times. My 5 y.o. son actually reading NEW and unknown words mostly correctly being though just 1st half of it.
In addition to the book we re-write each new word from the book 5 times, and write a sentence with it.
